663 Complex See Also Reference - Name (NR) (Variable Data Field)
Field 663 contains the explanatory text and the headings referred to that are required when relationships exist between an established name and other established names that cannot be adequately conveyed by one or more simple cross references generated from 5XX See Also From Tracing fields.
Field 663 is appropriate only in an established heading record for names.
The 1XX field in the record contains an established heading referred from.
Field 663 contains the explanatory text for the see also reference and the other established headings referred to.
The established heading in field 1XX is also traced in a 5XX field in a record for each of the established headings referred to in field 663.
Subfield $w/3 (Reference display) in each of the 5XX fields contains code c (Reference not displayed, field 663 used). Code c indicates that the generation of a simple cross reference from the 5XX field should be suppressed.
See example under the description of subfield $t (Title referred to).
A cross reference may be generated from the 1XX and 663 fields. A reference instruction phrase is incorporated into the text of subfield $a. Examples of complex cross reference displays are provided in Reference Note Fields: Complex Cross References.
The National level record requirement for this field is Optional.
