F 570 Commentaries on Individual Works

Background:

This instruction sheet provides guidelines for classifying commentaries on individual works. For more detailed background information and for guidelines on assigning subject headings, see H 1435.

Procedure:

Assign the same call number to a commentary that has been assigned to the original text in the original language. Provide this number to the shelflister with a request to treat the work as a commentary. If the full call number for the original work is not available, provide the shelflister with the classification number that would be assigned to the original work and inform the shelflister that the work is to be treated as a commentary.

Note: Many varying practices for the treatment of commentaries are provided in the various individual schedules, especially for classical authors, sacred works, etc. Such specific provisions in the schedules, as well as any practices that have been developed in specific areas take precedence over this general rule, and should continue to be followed.
