G 330 Artists (General)
Background: Works on individual artists are classed according to the medium described in the work being cataloged. A single artist may therefore be classed in several different numbers in the N schedule. General biographies and criticism of artists who work in several media are classed in N. Special individuals, families, or firms may be considered as special artists. The following categories of persons are not considered artists: art critics, art historians, art forgers, art thieves, art restorers, art patrons, and art dealers. Critical and biographical works about them are arranged according to the general biography rules and the Biography Table in G 320. Table N6 is completely different from the Biography Table. Even though the notation bears a superficial resemblance, none of the Cutters has the same meaning. This instruction provides guidelines in the application of the individual artist tables.
PROCEDURES:
1. Identification of biographical works
Follow the procedures given in G 320 for the identification of biographical works.
2. Biography tables
Use the tables below to subarrange works by and about individual artists throughout the N schedule.
a. Table N6. Use Table N6, where indicated in the N schedule, for classes with the form caption Special artists, A-Z. In such classes, the first Cutter designates the artist, e.g., ND623.L5, Leonardo da Vinci. The second Cutter is selected from the subarrangement of the table.
b. Table N7. Use Table N7, where indicated in the N schedule, when the first Cutter represents a region or country and the artist is represented by a second Cutter.
3. Translations
Apply the Translation Table to only two categories in Table N6 and one category in Table N7: in Table N6 apply it to .xA8-Z; in Table N7 to .x3-39. Do not use the Translation Table with the subarrangements of the artist tables that are prescribed by date, i.e., .xA2 to .xA6-79 in Table N6, and x to x2 in Table N7.
4. Obsolete Table
The individual artist table listed below was used prior to November 22, 1977. It is obsolete and is included here only as a point of reference.
5. Folio designations in the holdings record
See G 620, section 1.
