Character position definition and scope:

A three-character alphabetic code indicates the language associated with the community information entity.  The source of the code is MARC Code List for Languages that is maintained by the Library of Congress.

If more than one language is associated with the community information entity, all appropriate codes are given in field 041 (Language Code) and the first code is recorded in 008/12-14.

Textual information regarding the language(s) associated with the community information entity is given in field 546 (Language Note).

When there is only one language associated with the community information entity, the code for that language is recorded.

Example:

008/12-14  spa

[The language of the event is Spanish.  No 041 field is needed.]

If there is more than one language associated with the community information entity, the code for the predominant language is recorded here, and the codes for all of the languages, including the predominant language, are recorded in subfield $a of field 041 (Language Code).  The code recorded in 008/12-14 must always be the same as the first code in field 041, subfield $a.

Example:

Leader/07  p  [program or service]

008/12-14  eng

041  0#  $aeng$achi$afre$arus

546  ##  $aThe staff speaks English, Chinese, French, and Russian.

If there is no predominant language associated with the community information entity, the codes are recorded in English alphabetical order in field 041, and the first one is recorded in 008/12-14.

Example:

Leader/07  p  [program or service]

008/12-14  eng

041  0#  $aeng$aspa

546  ##  $aThe staff speaks English and Spanish.
